Mikis Theodorakis was an iconic figure, whose intersection of art and activism left a lasting impression on not only on the music he composed, but also the social movements he spearheaded. To honor his legacy, the Greek Chamber Music Project (GCMP) is producing an epic, one-time tribute concert to Theodorakis. In collaboration with the Berkeley Community Chamber Singers, GCMP will perform unique arrangements of Theodorakis’s Ballad of Mauthausen and selections of Canto General, two powerful pieces that embody struggle, freedom, and hope.

Harnessing Theodorakis’s renegade spirit, GCMP is commissioning Chariot of Dragons, which makes its world premiere at this concert. It features original music by Bay Area composer Costas Dafnis and poetry by Berkeley Councilmember Terry Taplin on themes of resistance. Chariot of Dragons is a modern response to the moments of today, and to Theodorakis’s masterful works.

“I [pose] one question: for whom I compose? My answer is I wanted to address all my people, and if I write music for the Greek people … I compose for all the people. I write for all the people, for all the world.”

-Mikis Theodorakis, NPR 1994
